Like the group\u2019s distinctive mode of dress, the pashkevil originated in medieval Europe. Its name can be traced to Pasquino, a Hellenistic-style statue outside Rome\u2019s Palazzo Braschi that was among the first \u201ctalking statues\u201d\u2014so called because its plinth was used as a bulletin board for anonymous messages. Observant Jews took up the practice, which spread to the shtetls of Eastern Europe and eventually to neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Jerusalem, where the blocky lettering and dramatic biblical metaphors now stand out starkly. The Israeli government, which has occupied the West Bank for\u00a0fifty years, considers the area disputed territory, though most\u00a0countries,\u00a0including the United States, view the settlements there\u2014228 of them\u2014to be a\u00a0violation of international law. The first Jewish Israelis who moved to the West\u00a0Bank after the Six-Day War were few in number and went mainly to reinforce\u00a0Israel\u2019s\u00a0borders against neighboring states. Later, they came with religious\u00a0and ideological motivations. In 1974, the founding of Gush Emunim (\u201cBloc of the\u00a0Faithful\u201d), a messianic movement, brought settlers who established new Jewish\u00a0outposts. The first Israelis\u00a0arrived in Eli ten years later, naming the town\u00a0after a biblical high priest. Gush Emunim is now defunct, but the group\u2019s\u00a0development arm, Amana, continues to build around Eli. Though the news was\u00a0quickly\u00a0overshadowed by the announcement of Hamas-PLO reconciliation, Abbas\u2019s threat\u00a0ought to be taken seriously. Even if Abbas\u00a0can deliver on the promise of\u00a0Palestinian unity, the PA will remain a weak institution lacking in legitimacy\u00a0until it achieves statehood. As\u00a0the prospects for statehood diminish, Abbas\u00a0will have little continued interest in maintaining peace, order, and stability,\u00a0and will look for\u00a0new and increasingly risky tactics\u2014like dissolving the\u00a0PA\u2014with which to confront Israel. The SodaStream allows\u00a0users to\u00a0carbonate their own tap water and, with the addition of syrup, transform it\u00a0into flavored soda. The device, which retails in the United States for $79.95\u00a0and up, is marketed as a\u00a0thrifty and environmentally friendly alternative to\u00a0the purchase of name-brand soft drinks. Between 2009 and 2012, SodaStream\u2019s\u00a0sales in the Americas grew from $14 million to $158\u00a0million; the company\u2019s\u00a0current market value is estimated at $1.2 billion. With this increase in\u00a0popularity has come the attention of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions\u00a0campaign\u00a0(BDS), a loosely affiliated movement that urges consumers worldwide to\u00a0shun Israeli goods and services until the country \u201ccomplies with international\u00a0law and Palestinian rights\u201d by\u00a0ending its occupation, establishing full\u00a0equality for Palestinians in Israel, and offering the right of return to\u00a0Palestinians abroad.
